Are anxiety disorders real?

If you are asking yourself if anxiety disorders are real, the short answer is “Yes, they do exist and there is more than one of them”. Anxiety disorders are well recognised and studies by the mental health community. You can find detailed information about these disorders on many websites like the Mind.org website. . There are various types of disorders and the most common are

  • Phobias

  • GAD

  • Panic Attacks

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorders

Many people ask if these disorders are real and this is because we do not talk openly about our emotions. We have learnt to hide our feelings and pretend we are fine. Anxiety is a true feeling and, while everybody has experienced it at some point in life, not all people develop a disorder. This might create confusion and might lead people to think that these disorders do not exist.

Sometimes it is healthy to feel anxious

Some people argue that anxiety is the first feeling a baby feels when born. When the baby gets what he/she needs, it ends. The same happens throughout our entire life when we feel anxious for a short time and we actually feel better when the cause of the anxiety goes away. This is what I call “healthy anxiety” because it spontaneously fades away.

When we do not get what we need, our anxiety remains with us and, with time, it can transform into a disorder, which does not go away spontaneously, but remains and goes on to the point that you don’t know why you are anxious at all.
