Interviewing a protector with IFS
These questions can help you get to know a protective part of you
To start with, take some time to breathe, take a pause, and bring your attention inwards.
Bring to mind a protective part of you or, if it is already present, focus on it and notice how it manifests itself in or around your body right now.
In what follows, I will ask you to embody that part of you and answer these 10 questions as if you were the part speaking in the first person. When you see the XXX, please substitute XXX with your name.
It is best if you write the answers down on a piece of paper or on an electronic document simply because it slows down the process (you might have parts that want to rush through this).
How do you protect XXX?
What are you afraid will happen if you do not do your job?
How did you get your job?
How do you feel about the job you are doing?
Are there any other ways you protect XXX?
How old are you?
How old were you when you began this job?
How old do you think XXX is now?
Is there another job you would like to do?
How do you feel toward XXX?
Now that you have finished, thank the part and notice how you feel towards that part. I hope you have learnt something new about yourself.
